Traditional electricity markets treat all demand as if it were identical. Every kilowatt-hour is assumed to have the same value, and reliability is largely delivered through system-wide engineering standards rather than explicit customer choice. As electricity systems become increasingly dependent on variable renewable generation and flexible demand, this one-size-fits-all approach becomes both inefficient and economically unsustainable.
FP-AMM introduces Service Levels as the mechanism through which consumers express the reliability requirements of their flexible energy services. Rather than purchasing electricity alone, customers contract for defined levels of service that specify how and when participating devices should be supplied. This allows flexibility to be incorporated explicitly into the market while ensuring that critical energy needs remain protected.
Service Levels separate essential consumption from flexible consumption. Essential services continue to receive the level of reliability expected from today's electricity system, while participating flexible devices—such as electric vehicles, batteries and heat pumps—can opt into different service levels in exchange for lower costs or enhanced guarantees. Reliability therefore becomes an explicit product that customers can choose, rather than an implicit assumption embedded within the electricity system.
