Shaun Sweeney

Shaun Sweeney is an engineer, researcher and entrepreneur working at the intersection of electricity markets, digital infrastructure and distributed energy systems.

He is the Founder of Enleashed, a research-led initiative developing and testing better ways for the systems that shape our lives to work for people and the planet. Its first and most developed mission is a fundamental rethink of electricity markets for a future dominated by renewable generation, batteries, electric vehicles and flexible demand.

Shaun's PhD research at Imperial College London develops a first-principles framework for fair, network-aware electricity markets, combining automatic market making, real-time coordination and fair value allocation. His research spans control theory, market design, network optimisation and distributed systems, with work published across energy economics, control and intelligent transportation.

Before returning to academia, Shaun spent more than a decade building products and delivering digital energy solutions across utilities, demand response, battery storage, flexibility markets and IoT platforms, including roles with Moixa, Simble, IBM Research, EnerNOC and ElectroRoute.

Through Enleashed, he is now applying the same first-principles approach beyond energy: questioning whether systems still serve their intended purpose, developing better alternatives where they do not, testing ideas against evidence, and bringing together people who can help turn good ideas into real-world change.
