Australian NEM + Dynamic Network Access

An emerging architecture combining five-minute regional wholesale dispatch and pricing with separate distribution-network access limits and increasing DER coordination.

Solution section

Principles

The core design assumptions and principles embedded in the architecture.

Principles

The architecture broadly relies on the following principles:

  1. Bulk-system dispatch should be updated frequently.
  2. Regional prices can remain sufficiently useful for wholesale settlement.
  3. Detailed transmission constraints can affect central dispatch without requiring nodal settlement.
  4. Distribution networks can communicate dynamic import/export capability separately from energy prices.
  5. DER controllers can optimise locally within those network limits.
  6. Wholesale energy and local network access can remain distinct signals.

This creates an interesting hybrid between central optimisation and distributed local control.
